There wasn’t much that Mery would let stand in her way. That included Tristan’s grim warning. Which was how, just after Pagez’s rehearsal, she ended up at the fenced enclosure adjacent to the miniature castle. The soldiers were there, preparing for the upcoming spectacle.
She peeked inside the yard. To her surprise, just inside the gate, speaking to a soldier, was the tambor player. She quickly dropped out of sight behind the fence of wooden stakes.
What was he doing here? Could the tambor player be the English spy? Was he planning to steal some of the weapons or commandeer the artillery?
She strained her ears to listen, but could only hear one side of the conversation.
“I’ve never seen so many big guns!” he exclaimed.
The soldier’s reply was muffled.
“Well, they seem powerful to me,” the tambor player said. “You must be quite fearless to withstand all the smoke and noise.”
She couldn’t hear the answer.
“What’s this one?”
There was a pause while the soldier explained.
“Zounds! And how does it work exactly?”
The soldier continued mumbling.
Finally, the tambor player sighed. “You know, I’ve always admired soldiers. You lads are so brave and strong.”
This was followed by a lot of quiet exchanges and giggling by the tambor player.
Then he asked, “But you’re quite sure they’re harmless?” He gave an audible shiver. “I’m certain tonight I shall be absolutely cowering in fright.”
The soldier mumbled for a long while.
Then the tambor player replied, “Ooh, fireworks? In that case, I may well need a cuddle to calm me down.”
Mery rubbed impatiently at the crease between her brows. Apparently, the mincing tambor player was plotting, not to hurt the prince, but to feed his own romantic appetites.
At least he’d done her one favor. He’d completed her investigation for her. The soldier had listed the armaments and decreed that the fireworks were indeed harmless. She hoped he was right.
